Will texting become extinct?
Phone companies missed out on $13.9 billion last year since more people are switching to other ways to communicate, like Facebook, twitter, blackberry messenger, and apple's imessage. This follows a decline from the year before-- revenues were down $8.6 billion in 2010 in texting. However, although the outlook in the future is to continue this trend of replacing traditional text messaging with communicating through apps, it was noted that still 75% of the world uses traditional texting. The sales were lost due to the younger generation, who are more technically savvy. Although this can be looked at as a negative to major cellphone companies, they need to remember that the lost revenues in texts can be recovered by the increase in data that needs to be used for the apps.
