Nomophobia--a real concern

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/nomophobia-on-the-rise-do-you-fear-being-without-your-mobile-phone/

Here are some statistics I found about nomophobia-- the fear of being without a phone

A survey of 1,000 Brits revealed that 66 percent feared being without their mobile phone (13% jump from four years ago)

41% of the 1,000 carry a second phone with them in case they lose their first one.

70% of the women surveyed would have anxiety if they were without their phone.

77% of those surveyed between the age of 18-24 said that they would be worried if they did not have their phone.

Cellphone addiction has become a serious issue, especially for our generation. I admit to having anxiety when I do not have my phone by my side. At restaurants I see couples sitting in silence on their phones. On campus, students are on their phone walking to class. Younger children are on their phones playing games. Even in movie theaters I can see the bright screen 15 rows up several times throughout the movie. It has completely taken over our culture. Texting has become the main way to communicate with people. Are we doomed as an American culture? Can we not even make it through a class/meeting/movie without wondering if anyone has contacted us? Will we ever be content turning off our phones or putting them away to enjoy other people's company?
