Social Media Example: Justin Bieber!

Justin Bieber, a popular musician worldwide, was in Canada a few months ago. He heard a song from a relatively unknown artist called “Call Me Maybe”, by Carly Rae Jepson. He decided that he really liked the song, and upon arriving back in Los Angeles, had his friends, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale, and others, listen to it. They decided that they really liked it as well, and when bored on a Friday night, made a home made music video to it. Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez then “tweeted” at the artist after following her and said how much they liked the song and that it was their new “jam”.  Followers and fans of both Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez saw the tweet and clicked on the artist. After a friend edited the music video, it was uploaded to YouTube. Fans discovered it and watched it, liked the song, and told others about it. The video of Justin Bieber and his friends quickly grew viral and fans discovered whom the original artist was. The video continued to grow quickly in popularity. Today, the homemade video has over 53 million views on YouTube, and Carly’s real music video has over 37 million views. Carly recently signed with a record company, and there are now remixes and covers to the song and is number 3 on iTunes top rated songs today. How did she gain popularity so quickly? Social media and some help through celebrity endorsements!
