Do Facebook "deleted" pictures ever really get deleted?

Facebook admitted that although users can delete pictures off of their account, the pictures can still remain on the internet for an extended period of time and are accessible via direct link. This is because the old system stored uploaded content and did not actually delete the photos in a timely manner. The company is working on a new system that will delete the photos in a month and a half.

As a frequent Facebook user, this article shocked me. I trusted Facebook to really delete pictures off of the internet and expected them to have the technology to do so. Facebook just came out with a new format called Timeline that is supposed to improve the quality of Facebook and engage users. Why don't they update their software and fix the kinks to keep consumers happy instead of updating the look of the program? Facebook, you don't need to fix what's not broken.
